Received an Income Tax Notice? A Calm, Step-by-Step Guide

By Ledgicore Nexus LLP • June 30, 2026 • 6 min read

Getting a notice from the Income Tax Department can be unsettling — but most notices are routine and have a clear, correct response. The worst thing you can do is ignore it. Here is a calm way to handle it.

Step 1: Read it carefully

Identify the section it is issued under and what it is actually asking for. Many "notices" are simply intimations that reconcile your return with the department’s records, not accusations of wrongdoing.

Step 2: Note the deadline

Almost every notice carries a response window. Missing it can escalate the matter or attract penalties, so put the date somewhere you cannot miss it.

Common types you may see

  • An intimation reconciling the tax you computed with the department’s calculation.
  • A notice pointing out that a filed return appears defective and needs correction.
  • A request for additional information or documents to support your return.
  • A notice reopening or reassessing income for a past year.

Step 3: Gather your records

Pull together the return, Form 26AS/AIS, proofs of income and deductions, and any documents the notice references. A well-organised response is faster and more credible.

Step 4: Respond through the portal

Most responses are filed online through the income tax e-filing portal within the stated deadline. Keep an acknowledgement of whatever you submit.

When to get help
