Goods and Services Tax (GST) registration gives your business a unique GSTIN and brings it into the formal tax system. Some businesses must register by law; others choose to register voluntarily for the benefits. Here is what you need to know.
Who needs to register?
- Businesses whose turnover crosses the prescribed threshold (the limit differs by state and by whether you supply goods or services).
- Anyone making inter-state taxable supplies.
- E-commerce sellers and operators.
- Casual and non-resident taxable persons.
- Businesses that want to voluntarily register to claim input tax credit and appear more credible to larger customers.
Why register (even voluntarily)?
A GSTIN lets you collect GST, claim input tax credit on your purchases, sell through most online marketplaces, and deal smoothly with GST-registered clients who expect a proper tax invoice.
Documents you will typically need
- PAN and Aadhaar of the proprietor/partners/directors
- Proof of business registration or incorporation (where applicable)
- Address proof of the principal place of business
- Bank account details
- Photographs and authorisation documents
The registration process, step by step
- Submit the application with your business and promoter details.
- Receive an Application Reference Number (ARN) to track status.
- Respond to any clarification the department raises.
- On approval, your GSTIN and registration certificate are issued.
What happens after you get your GSTIN
Registration is the start, not the finish. You will need to issue GST-compliant invoices and file periodic returns (such as GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B) on time. Missing returns leads to late fees and can block your input tax credit.
